MONTALCINO

Blending Escape

Wine and dine your way like a local through this beguiling, magical Tuscan region, with its medieval hillside villages and beautifully restored ancient farmhouses.

Pienza has become our home away from home, thanks to our own John Voigtmann, a 25-year resident, and this was our very first Blending Escape back in 2019. We come back every year to show you our Montalcino and its regal Brunello wines. You’ll gain direct access to the wealth of knowledge contained in the minds of our Montalcino partners, true Tuscan wine expert Roberto Cipresso and Brunello heavyweight Andrea Polidoro of Cupano. We will soak up the unique Tuscan culture through the eyes of locals, altogether avoiding the tourist’s Tuscany.

WHY YOU GO

• The rare opportunity to make both your own Super Tuscan and your own Brunello di Montalcino – two wines in just one Experience

• An al fresco lunch, prepared by a masterful chef and paired with the family’s wines, at a long table at the iconic Castello Sesti

• The chance to see Pienza through a true local’s eyes, on an adventure curated by The Vines’ own John Voigtmann, a 25-year resident

THE ITINERARY

DAY 1 - THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

BENVENUTI A MONTALCINO!

Welcome to the rolling hills of Tuscany, where history, wine, and beauty blend effortlessly. Upon arrival at either Florence or Rome airport, you’ll transfer to the charming town of Pienza, where you’ll check into the elegant La Bandita Townhouse – a stylish retreat perfect for unwinding before our unforgettable adventure begins.

Terroir Tasting: Introduction to the wines of Montalcino

Kick off our experience with an in-depth introduction to the renowned wines of Montalcino. With local expert John Voigtmann as our guide, we’ll explore the region’s history, unique terroir, and the magic behind its world-class wines.

Dinner at La Bandita Townhouse

Chef David Mangan will craft a seasonal feast of Tuscan delicacies, paired with a perfect selection of wines. We’ll be joined by special guest winemakers who will share their passion and insights over an evening of delicious food, exceptional wine and great conversation.

DDAY 2 - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

LEGENDS OF MONTALCINO

Super Tuscan blending session with Roberto Cipresso

Start the day with a rare opportunity to make a Super Tuscan wine with legendary winemaker Roberto Cipresso. Known for his deep knowledge and love for his region, Roberto will guide us through a tasting of his eponymous wines, and then help you craft the perfect personalized blend.

Lunch and Pecorino tasting at Marusco e Maria

We will stop in for lunch at this beloved gourmet market/no-frills osteria in Pienza, where rustic Tuscan dishes are served with soul, and every meal feels like Sunday lunch at a local’s table. After lunch we’ll be treated to a tasting of aged Pecorino cheese, a specialty of the region.

Private tour and library tasting at a famed Brunello producer

This afternoon we will visit a small, family-run winery tucked into the rolling hills of Montalcino, enjoying an intimate tasting with a rare glimpse into the soul of aged Brunello. Each bottle is a time capsule revealing the elegance, structure, and quiet power that only years in the cellar can bring.

Rest and relaxation at the hotel or self-guided walking tour of Pienza

Take time to unwind at the hotel or take a leisurely stroll through Pienza, exploring its Renaissance architecture, charming streets and shops, and breathtaking views of the Val d’Orcia.

Al fresco dinner at Dopolavoro La Foce

This magical farm-to-table dining experience will give you a window into the traditions and history of this regal wine region. Built in 1939, the space was a meeting place for the workers of the La Foce Estate.

DAY 3 - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

THE BEST OF BRUNELLO

Brunello blending session with Andrea Polidoro at Cupano

We begin the day blending our own Brunello with Cupano’s Andrea Polidoro, winemaker of this iconic estate. Andrea will share his expertise on the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, guiding us through a tasting of his own Sangiovese wines before we make our own.

Private wine tasting and lunch at Castello Sesti

The Sesti family, one of Montalcino’s most esteemed winemaking dynasties, will graciously open their historic estate to us for an exclusive private tasting of their exceptional Brunellos. Following the tasting, we’ll savor a once-in-a-lifetime lunch prepared by Michelin-starred chef Roberto Rossi of Il Silene. Known for his inventive approach to regional cuisine, Chef Rossi’s specially curated menu promises to be an extraordinary culinary experience.

Rest and relaxation

Unwind at your own pace – whether that means enjoying a quiet afternoon at La Bandita, taking in the Tuscan scenery, or exploring more of Pienza.

Farewell dinner at Buca delle Fate in Pienza

Our final dinner together will be a celebration of food, wine and adventure, hosted by a beloved chef and friend of The Vines. Expect an evening filled with unforgettable flavors, laughter, and a few surprises – all capped off with a farewell cocktail at La Bandita’s bar, where we’ll raise one last toast to an incredible journey.

DAY 4 - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13

ARRIVADERCI!

Departures, or continue on for further exploration.

THE DETAILS

How to arrive

Guests should ideally fly into Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR) and either rent a car or The Vines will arrange transfers (not included in trip cost) for the 1.5-hour drive to Pienza. The alternative airport is Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), and then a 2.5-hour drive to Pienza.

Accommodations

La Bandita Townhouse, a chic and luxurious 12-room hotel right in the historic center of the jewel box village of Pienza – the perfect stylish base from which to explore the region. The building is a rambling renaissance-era palazzo where nuns have lived for over 500 years, and the hotel’s restaurant is renowned for its fresh seasonal food.

Winemaking – Roberto Cipresso & Andrea Polidoro

This Experience is highly unique in that you have the opportunity to blend with not just one but two expert winemakers. A longtime Montalcino resident, Roberto Cipresso knows more about blending indigenous Tuscan grapes with international varietals than almost anyone in the region. He listens to your palate and then helps you craft a Sangiovese-based Super Tuscan wine that perfectly suits.

Andrea Polidoro, winemaker for Cupano, creates wines of elegance, richness, complexity, smoothness and balance sourced from the organically farmed estate vineyards near Montalcino town. The Sangiovese wines you will blend come from this exceptional terroir, and Andrea will guide you through the process as someone who knows it as well as anyone in the region.
