If the Napa Valley is the Mercedes of the United States wine world, and Santa Barbara its VW van with a surf rack, Paso Robles would be its Tesla: creative, rule bending and always on the cutting edge. California’s still relatively undiscovered
“other” winemaking region, located in San Luis Obispo county along the state’s Central Coast, has a relaxed, Wild West-type vibe that makes it one of the country’s most enjoyable wine region visits. And the innovative, free-thinking style here has led to some refreshingly creative wine developments, including some pioneering winemaking using Rhone varietals. But that’s not to say it’s all casual creativity — there are plenty of modern, sophisticated wines coming out of this fascinating region.
THE TERROIR
WINEMAKING

We partner with Juan Mercado of the new project RIISE. Originally from Mexico but having grown up in Northern California, Juan had a first career as a nurse, but was bitten by the wine bug, and began to explore. He met influential Napa winemaker Pax Mahle, along with several other New Guard Napa winemakers. When Mahle started Pax Cellars in 2000, Mercado offered to help him out, free of charge, and thus began his deep education in viti/viniculture. Juan later went out on his own and founded Realm Cellars in Napa, which quickly became a darling of the critics and amassed a multi-year waiting list. But in 2018, ready for a new adventure, he departed Realm to move to Paso Robles (a place he had always loved) and started RIISE with two purchased vineyards. He enlisted consulting winemaker Anthony Yount (Royal Nonesuch Farms, Kinero, Denner Vineyards) to make his wines, but remains the passionate “vintner” of the project, helping to craft wines of surprising elegance and restraint.
CULTURE
When not making our red blends with Juan and Anthony, we ride horses across the rolling hills of a working ranch, enjoy a sunset viewing of the stunning art installation Sensorio Light Show, experience the communal vibe of tasting and dining at Paso’s unique Tin City, and hike through the vineyards with a highly passionate Paso winemaker.
