Piemonte (or Piedmont in English) is regarded by many experts as the finest wine region in Italy, no small feat in a country that is renowned for producing some of the world’s most exceptional wines. This northern region expands across a large area, encompassing a wide range of diverse landscapes and terroirs, from the Langhe’s rolling hills to the steep slopes of Carema’s Alps. Historically speaking, Piemonte was the home of Italy’s last royal family, the house of Savoia, as well as a passage into Italy from France. Both of these facts gave rise to its rich cultural, gastronomic and viticultural heritage. The vast range of Piemonte’s wines and the hundreds of different expressions the regal Nebbiolo grape offers, depending on the unique terroir, make this region a true “something for everyone” region.
THE TERROIR
WINEMAKING
Here we partner with one of the most exciting family wineries in the region, G.D. Vajra. With 40 hectares under vine, with vineyards planted with Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera at heights of 350-400 meters, the 100% family-owned estate embodies tradition and elegance. Original founder Aldo and Milena, now joined by their children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, continue the family legacy. The holdings in Barolo’s highest cru Bricco delle Viole, planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather, are the prized vineyards of the estate, but other more recently acquired vineyards also give us a gorgeous Langhe Nebbiolo and a range of Barolos. This group of dedicated, passionate winegrowers are sensitive to the human role in winemaking, remaining faithful to the traditional and authentic wines of Piemonte. Aldo says “A tree does not grow without roots,” underscoring the deep connection and affection for those who have lived and loved the land. The estate is often hailed as “one of Piedmont’s best-kept secrets,” – and the wines are so good, we’d like to keep it that way.
CULTURE
When not making Barolo, we hike through the rolling hills between picturesque villages, immerse ourselves in rich gastronomic legacy of the region (including those world famous white and black truffles) and are introduced to the storied winemaking of the regions by some of the in-the-know local producers.
